Artist Profile: Bianka Carson

My Aboriginal heritage came from my grandmother who was from Ceduna, SA. I was born on Boandik country, so my culture is a mixture of past, present and adopted. I am lucky to have some very caring, helpful, trustworthy and supportive elders around me, who I can learn from. Ceduna tribes include Wirangu, Mirning, Kokatha and Pitjantatjara. My language group is Wirangu. I grew up with aunties telling me stories about natural resources, remedies and traditional bush medicine. Other stories were around landmarks, water sources, animals and spirits. I am very passionate about my cultural heritage. I love painting with bright colours and blending colours on the canvas to create different shades, gradients and patterns within a painting, but it depends on what I feel like painting at the time.

Bianka's Journey

Bianka paints mostly about family, relationships and things that are important to her.

I gained courage to learn to paint after spending my first block of placement for my Social Work Degree at a prison. I was able to yarn with many Aboriginal Artists about paint, resources, technique and picturing what I wanted to achieve. I felt an immediate sense of calm and connection with my culture (unless i smudged a circle, or dropped paint somewhere I didn't want it!!) I spent a few years painting until I felt ready to sell my work. Sometimes I'll get an idea or have an experience for a story and feel the need to start sketching out a new series or piece. So, I guess I paint emotionally a lot of the time..
